The former [redacted] presidential candidate has helped raise more than $20 million so that felons who completed their prison sentences can vote in the presidential election [ by paying off their fines, restitution, and/or court fees ]. [Redacted] also has pledged $100 million to help [redacted] win Florida.

Both of these two sentences, on their own, are perfectly fine, but as soon as you put them together, and the same person is doing both, how is this not just buying votes, political affiliation aside?

Kinja'd!!!

And if you could care less... best personalized plate for an SS?

A better question is “why are felons not allowed to vote?”

If a felon is unable to vote until they have paid a fine/restitution, isn’t that just a poll tax?

I’m inclined to believe that it is hard to have both the intention to help people register to vote and also be a candidate (See Stacey Abrams ), but I can understand why it isn’t that controversial when you consider how hard it is to register to vote in some American states, and how those restrictions sometimes (especially since the weakening of the voting rights act) happen to affect some communities more intensely than others. For those attempts to involve money seems almost inevitable in America’s bizarre voting system.

I n the case of Florida, there was a ballot measure to allow ex-convicts to vote, and as far as I’ve understood said ballot measure wasn’t applied because of a court decision.

Certainly, most of the people that would be registered would probably vote for the person that helped them register... but it’s kind of politicking at this point... It’s controversial, for sure, but also, these people have a right to vote and to be represented yet maybe they don’t have the right guidance or tools to do so.

Contextualized with increasingly tighter voting registration laws, I think this awkward situation is inevitable, but also not the more controversial of the two.

Voting in the US is just very hard.
Look at this for instance:

America’s population pyramid
Mexico’s population pyramid

Despite our significant underage population we have 89M voters out of 129M peoples, meanwhile the US has 153M voters out of 331M peoples.

Even accounting for a significantly higher immigrant population in the US (which matters because REASONS) the US simply has a much smaller portion of their population registered to vote than Mexico... Remember Mexico was practically a dictatorship until the late 70s and that we’re much poorer. Then why is it that we have nearly 23,000  more voters per 100,000 inhabitants than the US does?

Although we have voter ID’s those aren’t necessary to vote, you can sue the government to let you vote if you couldn’t get one on time, or if it expired. and you don’t need formal proof of citizenship or nationality to get one either...

The way our elections operate might be the only good thing about modern Mexican government, which is why I use it as an example, and it still is restrictive.

I had to give an ID, proof of citizenship, and proof of residence to get my voter ID... which was free, lasts for 10 years, and is useful for other things (it’s a defacto national ID here), yet in Spain I was registered to vote by simply declaring proof of residence and citizenship. I didn’t need an ID, and I was automatically registered to vote abroad by my embassy.

All of this was also free.

I’m not saying that what is happening is somewhat shady, I’m just saying that the systems let the shady thing occur because the systems failed to cater to the needs of the population.

It’s not very hard, especially given how much money the US spends on elections. It’s just that most countries prefer having national elections rather than numerous internal ones that add up to a single result that then is manipulated to represent an adjustment that maybe is misleading to the concept of democratic voting.

Nonetheless,
Clearly, it’s strange that this could happen and in Mexico it would probably be considered illegal to give money or help in a lawsuit in exchange for a vote, however... getting registered to vote here isn’t as hard as in the US.

and I’m not saying our laws are perfect; voting from abroad as a Mexican is very complicated, those jailed and imprisoned cant vote, and we don’t have voting by mail either.

Considering hundreds of millions of dollars are shunted annually via funding coalitions at all levels of elected government to essentially buy votes (via campaigns ,) at least this attempt is out in the open where people can see it.

Really the whole funding election thing needs to be rethought from the ground up, but since the people who get elected are the ones who are good at the current system, there’s no incentive to change it.

The reason the paying the fines is even a thing is due to republican ratfuckery.

Florida voters voted to give felons the right to vote. Florida republican legislature then passed a new law saying they couldn’t vote unless they pay outstanding fees.

It’s a bullshit racist poll tax meant to disenfranchise people who by virtue of being poor and minorities might be more inclined to vote against republicans.

So basically, fuck those ratfucking fuckers.

I’m actually paying close attention to ballot measures in this upcoming election. Some of the shit being proposed (and yes, shit is the proper term) is downright insane. CA proposing a tax that sticks with you for 10 years after leaving is probably both unconstitutional and a violation of the interstate commerce act .

I need to go through all of the states, but CA has some real duesies inlcuding an odd change to the voting age in CA to try and offset older folks . They also want statewide rent control (there is almost no evidence that rent control works).

I have still not heard a satisfying answer on why felons should vote at all.

I understand that the US was meant to be a representative r epublic or whatever, but the elections for President are not   advertised to voters as 50 state referendums on who the 50 state governments should vote (with a number of votes assigned both by population and by mere existence) to become president. It’s a bit misleading. Since you’re literally not  electing the Presidents. and states should have all the power except when they don’t (See Bush v. )

I don’t know, if you’ve paid your debt to society, (most) everyone deserves a second chance.

Not advertised? If someone doesn’t know how our system works, that’s on them. I know my vote (at the national level) is basically worthless, fwiw.

I understand that some minimal research might show people how things are actually, but that doesn’t make it right. The government and it’s members shouldn’t act in a way that almost purposely distracts people from how things actually are. It’s like saying Mcdonalds was OK to sell LFTB because the burden of research and proving they were misleading had to fall on the consumer.

I’d say that the GOP knows they won’t get votes from felons because many of them are people of color. The Dems know this and want felons to vote.

I believe felons should be able to vote after their sentence, because they’ve paid their debt to society. But of course, this is also political.

Florida had a ballot measure during the 2018 elections that passed with 65% majority and allowed felons ( except those convicted of murder or sexual abuse) to vote after completing their sentences .

The Florida’s GOP govt. didn’t like this, so they enacted legislature SB7066 that required ex- felons to pay off fines and fees before they can vote. This is a form on poll tax, which is unconstitutional according to the 14th a mendment.

The GOP govt then defended this legislature in Eleventh circuit court of appeals using tax payer money to keep this poll tax.

Talk about defying the will of voters to hold on to power.

Here’s a bit of history on poll tax, according to wikipedia.

Payment of a poll tax was a prerequisite to the registration for voting in a number of states until 1965. The tax emerged in some states of the United States in the late nineteenth century as part of the Jim Crow laws. After the right to vote was extended to all races by the enactment of the Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, a number of states enacted poll tax laws as a device for restricting voting rights. The laws often included a grandfather clause, which allowed any adult male whose father or grandfather had voted in a specific year prior to the abolition of slavery to vote without paying the tax.  These laws, along with unfairly implemented literacy tests and extra-legal intimidation, achieved the desired effect of disenfranchising African-American and Native American voters, as well as poor whites.

Thank you for the graph.

In my native the Netherlands you don’t need to register to vote. If you are eligible (age, citizenship) you simply get the appropriate paperwork in the mail. No action required. You show your ID at the voting booth to prevent fraud , and you can vote.
